The Management Toolbox

Introduction

Running a business, in whole or in part, is not easy.  Being a manager is not easy.  The skills and abilities to do so are not always intuitive and can be counter-intuitive.  We are not born with the tools that we need to be an effective manager.  However, little that we do is being done for the first time; millions of other managers have preceded us, and we can learn from them.

The materials provided in Ascent Advising’s Management Toolbox are designed to provide a framework for management.  It is very broad – meaning it covers most of the fundamental management concepts – and in some instances, fairly deep – meaning it will take these concepts to a fair level of detail.

This material is targeted at:

  • Business professionals without an academic business background, or

  • Entrepreneurs (especially those whose careers consist mostly of working for themselves), or

  • First time managers, or

  • Owners/managers of a new or small businesses, or

  • People who have their expertise in non-management (likely technical) areas, and

  • Others who wish to better understand and utilize business management concepts.

Topics Covered:

  • What is management?  A working definition

  • How management integrates with other functions, duties, tasks and roles

  • The building-blocks of management; What they are, how they interact, how to use them

  • Planning

  • Organizing

  • Developing People

  • Culture and Climate

  • Controlling and Directing

  • Communicating

  • Management communications

  • Management tools such as time management; holding effective meetings; delegation; and many more

  • An organizational review of “key deliverables”

  • Practical application assistance

The format for the presentation is quite flexible and would work equally as well as a keynote speech, a group discussion among a team of managers, or a multi-part course in a classroom setting.
